Charitable Remainder Trusts – A Deep Dive – with Karl Mill of Adler & Colvin
Whether you are completely new to Charitable Remainder Trusts, or you are a seasoned gift planner who enjoys complex case studies, this presentation will have something for you! Karl will start with the basics of CRTs, what are they, how do they work, and the benefits they offer your donors and your organization. He will then move into the different types of CRTs available, and when to suggest your donors consider them. Finally, he will share some detailed case studies and additional issues that often arise when helping donors include charitable remainder trusts in their philanthropic plan.
Karl Mill is a partner at Adler & Colvin, a boutique law firm in San Francisco, California that exclusively represents non-profit organizations and their donors, with specialized expertise in non-profit corporate law and federal tax law applicable to exempt organizations. Karl’s practice focuses on the representation of a wide variety of nonprofit and tax-exempt organizations, including both public charities and private foundations, with a particular emphasis on charitable gift planning, federal tax law, and social enterprise. Before joining Adler & Colvin, Mr. Mill practiced in the trust and estates department of DLA Piper LLP in San Diego, where he focused primarily on estate planning and federal estate, gift, and generation-skipping-transfer taxation. Karl is a graduate of Columbia Law School (J.D.), with degrees from Marist College (B.A., Philosophy) and University of Mississippi (M.A., Education).
