GENERAL DESCRIPTION

St. Vincent de Paul, Portland Council (SVdP-PC) was founded in 1869 in the spirit of justice and charity to help individuals and families living in poverty. The Society is open to all who wish to live their faith by loving and serving their neighbor. It has always been a grass roots organization using volunteers who perform the outreach of the Society. There is a staff of 10, a volunteer Board of nine serving a five-county area through a network of 1,700 volunteers from 48 parishes organized by local Catholic parishes. We are seeking an experienced Director of Development to help us support this important work.The Director of Development is hired by and reports directly to the Executive Director of SVdP-PC. The Director of Development executes a comprehensive development program in support of daily operations, special events, and strategic objectives. The Director works in concert with the Executive Director and collaborates with the Board of Directors and staff.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Create an annual development plan for the organization. Identify funding requirements for daily operations and preferred funders who support values consistent with SVdP-PC.
  • Fundraising.  Oversee multiple development efforts including annual and special appeals, quarterly newsletter appeals, special events and social media presence. Undertake donor prospect research, identify new corporate and foundation funders and prepare applications for multiple granting sources.
  • Maintain and build the donor base.  The Director of Development and the Executive Director are responsible for the cultivation, solicitation, recognition and retention of donors. The Director of Development is responsible for overseeing the accuracy and insuring the highest and best uses of the organization’s donor database.
  • Communicate with and train staff and Board members.  Communicate development goals to staff and the Board of Directors at recurring staff meetings and Board meetings as required by the Executive Director.  Training is designed to ensure consistent communication to active and prospective donors, corporations, foundations, partner organizations and other potential supporters of SVdP-PC.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Development/Fundraising:  Demonstrated success in nonprofit development. Experience with a faith-based nonprofit organization preferred but not required. Experience executing annual appeals and success in fundraising from multiple donor channels.
  • Project Leadership: Experience planning, leading, and managing development projects, including coordination with others to achieve desired outcomes. Experience tracking and reporting on progress to manager, peers, and Board members.
  • Communication: Persuasive written and verbal communication and the ability to express the case for support of fundraising efforts. Experience developing and presenting information to a wide variety of external groups and potential partners.
  • Relationship Building: Able to establish and maintain strong working relationships across SVdP-PC and partner nonprofit organizations. Effective at working with others to reach common goals and objectives.
  • Entrepreneurial Spirit.  Possess the confidence and initiative to deepen current donor relationships; re-engage expired relationships, and forge new relationships in support of SVdP-PC.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in liberal arts or business required.
  • A minimum of five years fund development experience.
  • Demonstrated experience and success in philanthropic development, including major and principal gifts; comprehensive campaigns; annual and special gifts, and working knowledge of various vehicles used in charitable estate planning.
  • Experience using social media fundraising methods and programs.
  • Successful outcomes in grant writing and grant reporting.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Occasional hours outside of normal business hours for meetings and programs.
  • Travel required.  Must possess a motor vehicle, valid driver’s license, and current personal vehicle insurance.

SALARY AND BENEFITS 

  • This is a .8 FTE position. The salary is $60,000 per year.
  • Pro-rated benefits package includes health insurance, holiday, sick and vacation pay.
